The SeatComp project aims at the development of a lightweight multifunctional composite structure based on powdered epoxy resin reinforced with glass and natural fibres complying with fire regulations and suitable for powder painting, applicable for production of seats and supporting cantilevers for the railway sector.
The project will contribute to enable TAPS, a Polish SME and leading European railway seat producer, to offer a lightweight, shape-customised, environment-friendly composite product in short series and at an attractive price, providing the company with a competitive advantage. This could potentially help achieving increased sales of app. EUR 50 million over the next 5 years.
In order to fulfil TAPS requirements, four OASIS technical services supported by one business service were identified. The proposal assumes the use of innovative flame retardant nanoparticles and carbon nano tube (CNT) doped veils offered by OASIS pilot lines. CNT-doped veils used as a surface finishing will allow for achieving the electrical conductivity needed for the powder painting process. After the selection of the most effective nanomaterials, the demonstrator of the fragment of the seat/ cantilever structure will be manufactured at the end of the project. The mechanical, electrical and fire properties of the composite panels will be examined, this examination will be supported by microstructure observations. In parallel numerical analysis of the composite cantilever using FEM will be performed to redesign its shape and optimize its thickness. The selected business service will contribute to identifying available EU public R&D funding opportunities to streamline TAPS international R&D cooperation.
